International Association of Paper Historians
The IPH integrates professionals of different branches and all friends of paper within the field of paper history. It coordinates all interests and activities in paper history as an international specialist association co-operating with international, regional and local organisations not only of paper historians but also of keepers of archives and libraries, conservators, art historians, specialists in books, printing and technology, associations of the paper industry, the publishing trade etc., including handicraft and artistic activities in connection with paper.

The Institute of Paper Conservation
The Institute of Paper Conservation is the leading organisation devoted to the advancement of the conservation of books, archives, and art on paper.

Paper Federation of Great Britain
The Paper Federation of Great Britain is the trade association representing UK manufacturers of pulp, paper and board. Site includes industry key statistics.

Books

Frances Wakeman Books
Specialists in antiquarian and out-of-print books on papermaking, paper specimens, watermarks, marbling, decorated paper, as well as books on bookbinding, printing, typography, etc. At this site you can search a selection of our stock and view our on-line catalogues. Free printed catalogues available upon request.

John Balston
Three volumes by John Balston on James Whatman and the development of wove paper. Some details of the history of the company and on wove paper, includes useful extracts from the books on making wove paper and associated topics.

British Book Trade Index
The British Book Trade Index, or BBTI, is an index of the names and brief biographical details and trade details of people who worked in the book trade in England and Wales and who were trading by 1851. There is a separate Scottish Book Trade Index.

Paperonline
Useful site for up to date facts and figures, by country, of paper production. Also a section on paper history and a very useful question and answer page, particularly for technical questions on modern paper production.

Genealogy

Papermakers.org.uk
A site which which is intended to become a central focus for all genealogical   papermaking interests in the United Kingdom, currently under development but has a listing of most of the information relating to the paper industry from the 1881 census returns.

Webguide to the world of handmade paper
About mid of 1998 this website started as a one-page-only list of links and developed continuously into a gateway to handmade paper on the internet. All links are accompanied by short comments in same language as the website referred to.

A Short History of Paper Boats
Over a hundred years ago a prosperous industry emerged in Troy, New York in the manufacture of rowing boats and canoes from paper. These ranged from simple single-person rowing shells to a 45 foot "pleasure barge" that could seat seventeen in addition to its six oarsmen.

Paper History International Hall of Fame
A predominantly American based organisation but useful for 19th and 20th century information on U.S. papermakers and papermaking firms.

Sapphire Project
The SAPPHIRE project has created a valuable sound archive and database of material on social, economic and cultural aspects of the twentieth century Scottish print and publishing industry from people who are or have been involved within that industry during their working lives. Part of this is a new initiative looking into the oral and social history of papermaking on the Water of Leith.

Museums

Heron Corn Mill
In 1988, to commemorate 500 years of paper making in England, the barn on the site was refurbished to house the Museum of Paper Making, adding another dimension to the site. Paper making is an important local industry, established over 250 years ago on the opposite bank of the river.

Watermarks

The Thomas L. Gravell Watermark Archive
A collection of over 7,000 watermarks on handmade paper in both the United States and Europe from the 15th to the 19th centuries. You will need technical knowledge in order to use this site.

Watermarks collected by Gabriel Garcia. Mostly fairly recent examples but good images and worth a browse for watermark images and references as he is constantly updating.
